An Old New Post

Okay, it’s official: I’m lazy.

I’m trying to take old writing and post it, as if I had my own “archives.” I don’t have that kind of status, sadly. But I am kind of manic lately (that old bipolar is coming back to haunt me), and I think some of this old writing is worth sharing. It should have made it into the blog. This is from a strange day in 2025.

I took my neighbor to court this morning…okay, that didn’t sound right. I drove my neighbor to the courthouse for his jury duty appointment. He was anxious. I gave him a cigarette. He asked how he could get out of it. I said “tell them you’re a bipolar schizophrenic.” He laughed. “I’m gonna tell em there’s a little green man at my house, made all my furniture disappear.” I thought that was creative.

Since the courthouse is near Beach Street I decided to go to Copperline Coffee after I dropped him off. I got a small hot coffee (at most places now you have to specify if you want hot or cold. I don’t get it). It was three dollars; my mother said coffee prices have gone up due to tariffs. The outside “patio” is rustically decorated, with stuff like antlers on the wall, vintage paintings of faded flowers. Lots of brown. I like it. But John says “these places” (coffee shops) are full of plotting socialists and communists. The keyword here is plotting. I’m glad I just like coffee and I’m not political. But politically speaking, why did they tell me I can’t smoke on their “patio”? I get it, I’m disturbing the patrons. At least they could admire me for using my lid as an ashtray. “F-ing communists,” I said under my breath, and I left.

So now I’m at the library, a place I never spend time. To get books, yes; to linger, no. It’s better than sitting in the hot car. It’s better than trying to smoke 50 feet away from the building, in the rain. But it’s so big and quiet; why are all these people choosing to sit in silence? There’s just something about the atmosphere…like we’re all suffering some punishment of our own doing. Like something’s going to explode. Like somebody’s going to fart or a phone is going to ring, and the sacred space will be ruined. When did libraries become cool again?

I am sorry about the formatting on here — there’s something up with the copy and paste and the settings.
