The Best Recovery Song Ever

If there’s one song I could listen to forever, or at least every day, that would have to be Don’t Look Back by the band Boston. It came out in 1978 on the album of the same name, way before I was listening to music…cause I wasn’t even born (I hate the term millennial. Don’t lump me in with those 2000s people). I’m a fan of classic rock already, but I must have rediscovered this song (or it discovered me). The lyrics are in such alignment with new found sobriety:

I’m much too strong not to compromise

everything in my life was leading me on

cause I can’t lose now, there’s no game to play

I see what I am is holding me down

Plus it has a killer beat; I love Bostons rhythmics. Sadly, I found out that the lead singer, Brad Delp , lost his life to suicide, and that pains me because the music that I love that he helped create could not save him. It speaks to me every time I listen to it: it’s like having peace of mind with more than a feeling, lol. I hope it never loses its magic, and maybe even gets better with time like a fine wine (oh no!).

Anyways,

There’s lots of other music that I find inspirational in my recovery, like Eminem’s Not Afraid and Evanescence’s Bring Me to Life, but doesn’t quite have the upbeat vibe of Bostons music. They are unique in that respect ( the founder Tom Scholz was trying to create a new sound (much like Van Halen). I think it has a fun sound like Rush. And Def Leppard).  At my aunts pool party this summer she had us make name tags that listed our favorite band. I wrote down Chicago, because I adore them, but later on I felt guilty and knew I should have wrote Boston (literally so guilty i wrote it on there later when I got home. Gotta represent! (Really if you can’t choose, do you even have a favorite band? It should be a no brainer (honestly I don’t really have a favorite band , just favorite songs))). Speaking of, Chicago has a great song on the subject: Feeling Stronger Every Day. I think it’s supposed to be about a breakup, but hey you can break up with alcohol (and rebound with coffee :/).

I think that for anything you want to do, you can find a song to inspire you. I’m trying to live by my new motto: stop dreaming and start doing. We’ll see how that goes. For now it involves writing for this blog. Not gonna lie, sometimes it keeps me up all night. I love it.  I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.
